Hi people! I have face book and I'm having problem accessing and using it with jaws. Any help with it is needed. Thanks so much to all!

What exact problems are you having? Also if you just want the basic functions of facebook without all the extra applications you can use the mobile site:

If you want to use the main interface though PM me with some specifics and I'll do my best to help you.

Yeah, that is the best way to go. I think we were talking about it on skype, and you asked me about those quizes and applications. I think, you can also access those quizes and some other applications through the webiste provided above. You'll get the hang of it. If your still having trouble with those, just send me a message.

As far as I know, applications are not available through the mobile site. I've written to them to complain about a lot of accessibility issues, as it seems like the main site keeps gettting less accessible...but the mobile site is good for most things, so I just use that most of the time. One thing I really wish they would work on though is getting it so that you can confirm friend suggestions on mobile, because that's just plain annoying when you have to use your jaws cursor just to get it to confirm, and half the time it doesn't even work.

unfortunately a website with more than 200 million active users isn't gonna priortize a complaint for a group that probably make up 1% or so of its user group

agree, i'd love to be able to accept friend suggestions and create groups

I'm also finding it harder to use the main site. There are podcasts on accessibleworld.org, and there's a two-part series on ACB Radio's main menu. They've only put part one of the series up so far. Thus far, both deal with account settings and getting started. I'm waiting for the second part of the series to see what they address there.

Yeah, the main site is just way too frustrating, and I only use FB to keep track of my friends and family. It's a great tool, especially during the summer since we're scattered all over the country and not at college anymore. For those purposes, the mobile site is fine, and I would rather not have to deal with the frustration of trying to run applications. Yeah, site accessibility surely isn't a priority, so I guess we do the best with what we have!

Odd, I have no probelms at all with the main site, and if jaws doesn't find something that I see on screen, a quick insert+escape fixes it.

Post 10 by Ukulele<3 (Try me... You know you want to.) on Tuesday, 04-Aug-2009 21:46:33

Yeah I know right. I can use fb and most of the apps without any problems. Insert escape is something I use a lot too. I think it's the user and their knowledge of their screenreader that is the main problem.

It also works quite well with NVDA and firefox.

And if I run into a situation where NVDA doesn't see something, I use jaws.

A combination of both screen readers work rather nicely.

I just tried out facebook chat using NVDA and firefox, and it worked flawlessly.

It's amazing how well something works when you take the time to use it.

Also the website changes quite often.

Post 13 by monkeypusher69 (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Wednesday, 05-Aug-2009 19:22:11

and insert + escape does waht exactly? it says screen refresh.

Post 14 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Wednesday, 05-Aug-2009 22:31:32

It tells jaws to redraw the screen in its video intercept, theirby picking up things that should be their, and if you have sight that you can see, but jaws might not pick them up right away.

i have no problems :). you just have to get used to it. i can add friends and make groups with no prob. it does require a lot of refreshing of the screen though. it took me a while to get used to it but once i did i was better off

Post 16 by Brooke (I just keep on posting!) on Thursday, 06-Aug-2009 8:24:34

Almost everytime someone posts an accessibility question, someone is quick to make a condescending post about how the biggest problem is lack of knowledge about a screen reader. Not every person out here is going to know every single function of Jaws or WindowEyes.

I've run into many sites (including Facebook) that aren't always easy to navigate, and I hate to report that refreshing the screen didn't always solve the problem.

Post 17 by monkeypusher69 (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Thursday, 06-Aug-2009 15:30:20

Couldn't of said it better myself. The reason we post here is to draw off the collective knowledge of the blind community, its rare even if you were shown all the features of a screen reader when you first get it that you will use all its features and thus over time tend to forget some except the few that you use daily.

I use fb and also the mobile site. I like the mobile site better for some things. I wish friends suggestions and certain applications could be added to the mobile site.

Post 19 by robbiec12345 (Good night and Farewell ) on Friday, 07-Aug-2009 6:39:40

the one thing i'd like to be able to do on the mobile site is create and search for groups. i can hardly use the main site with my braillenote because the site is full of javascript and flash and other inaccessible crap.

Hi Pips! Thanks for those ideas you have posted. I already use the mobile site for Facebook which is www.m.facebook.com. Using the basic functions of FB are fine there especially posting status, adding and accepting friends, reading and answering messages ... But the applications that may be added on the profile didn't work on there. If you use the main site www.facebook.com you may see the selected application but there are links or buttons that are not working upon clicking them especially how to post that on the user's profile. Any help from you would be appreciated. Thanks! Just send me private message if its fine with you all. Thanks so much to all!

Well, the good news is that you can now upload photos on the mobile site! So I guess it's only a matter of time until they can figure out a way to put certain applications on there as well. We can hope so anyway, right?
